  1. 1.

Plant young vines outdoors in early to late spring, after the danger of frost has passed. Choose an area that is exposed to full morning sun and partial afternoon shade.

  2. 2.

Make sure that the soil is rich and moist with adequate drainage. Test for drainage by watering an area until a puddle forms on top of the soil. If the puddle absorbs into the soil after a couple of hours, then the drainage is fine. If the puddles remains, work peat moss into the soil and test again.

  3. 3.

Plant vines near a fence or wall to encourage climbing. If a permanent structure is not available, erect a trellis or post. Garden stakes may be used.

  4. 4.

Plant vines at least 2 inches in the ground, so that the root ball is completely covered. Space plants 3 to 4 inches apart.

  5. 5.

Secure vines to the structure with removable ties. Remove or change the location of the ties as the vine grows in the desired direction.

  6. 6.

Water regularly to keep soil moist. Be careful not to overwater. If the soil around the vine is dry to the touch, then it needs water.
