Plant young vines outdoors in early to late spring, after the danger of frost has passed. Choose an area that is exposed to full morning sun and partial afternoon shade.
Plant vines near a fence or wall to encourage climbing. If a permanent structure is not available, erect a trellis or post. Garden stakes may be used.
Plant vines at least 2 inches in the ground, so that the root ball is completely covered. Space plants 3 to 4 inches apart.
Secure vines to the structure with removable ties. Remove or change the location of the ties as the vine grows in the desired direction.
Water regularly to keep soil moist. Be careful not to overwater. If the soil around the vine is dry to the touch, then it needs water.
